      <image:title>Alongside Autumn - The Project</image:title>
<image:caption>In Autumn 2019, Matilda walked the length of Scotland, solo, self sufficient, carrying everything she needed on her back, without any expedition support. She walked over mountains, through valleys, towns and one city – The city of Glasgow. She walked through some of the most beautiful and desolate wilderness of Scotland. It was Matilda’s own route – linking old paths to make a new path. During her walk Matilda composed and performed music with musicians in six unique places across Scotland. The music emerged and developed through the people she met, the landscapes she passed in and through, the thoughts that ran through her head – her mind turning over like her feet stepping one foot in front of the other.</image:caption>

<image:title>Alongside Autumn - Musical Monsters and Outdoor Learning at Wallace Hall Primary School</image:title>
<image:caption>P3 and P6 children at Wallace Hall Primary School enjoyed working with composer Matilda Brown to create music inspired by monsters. The project came about as part of Matilda's 'Alongside Autumn' project, involving Matilda walking 500 miles over the length of Scotland with her faithful canine companion, Jasper, for company, stopping to perform and compose music with local communities along her route. Wallace Hall Primary School was her first port of call. The children participated in a whole day music workshop, thinking of plot lines for the monster music and then experimenting with a variety of traditional and electronic musical instruments to compose the piece together.</image:caption>

<image:title>Footsteps Marking Time - The final performance took place at The Macphail Centre in Ullapool that November, a town in the middle point of the Cape Wrath Trail, featuring live music by Matilda’s group of musicians she works with regularly and visuals by Edinburgh-based artist Ger O’Brien.</image:title>
<image:caption>An exciting and beautiful production that captures and unites the physical and emotional journey of one woman’s solo walk 238 miles across the highlands with one man’s journey of dance in a studio in Scoraig. Footsteps Marking Time is the result of a year-long collaboration between choreographer Joan Clevillé and Glasgow-based composer Matilda Brown. The work is inspired by two parallel endurance experiences: Matilda’s solo walk of the Cape Wrath Trail (238 miles across the Scottish Highlands), and Joan’s voluntary ‘confinement’ in a studio in the remote peninsula of Scoraig. Both journeys happened simultaneously during three weeks in spring 2014. After the walk, Matilda and Joan shared their findings and stories – their trials and tribulations, the people they met, the trees, the birds, the solitude. Together they worked in various locations across Scotland – Dundee, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Loch Tay- in a series of residencies organised with the support of Citymoves, Scottish School of Contemporary Dance, Scottish Dance Theatre and Forestry Commission Scotland.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Footsteps Marking Time - The Project</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2014, Matilda walked the furthest she had ever walked in one go - Three weeks walking the Cape Wrath Trail - her own route, 230 miles across the Scottish Highlands, camping and bothying. At the very same time, for three weeks, Choreographer, Joan Cleville danced and moved non-stop in a studio in the remote peninsula of Scoraig. “I wanted to experience what the rhythm of walking would feel like, emotionally and physically, after days upon days of walking through Scotland’s wilderness on my own. It was important to me to carry my pack with everything I needed each day too. I was seeking adventure and solitude.” Both journeys happened simultaneously during three weeks in Spring 2014.

      <image:title>Winter in Knoydart - The Project</image:title>
<image:caption>The first of Matilda’s Mountain Bothy Projects was in collaboration with photographer Ben Winston. Matilda walked across Knoydart for five days and nights in the depths of the winter freeze 2009/2010. The Scottish Winter Tour was born out of this trip, where Matilda wrote music in response to her many arduous and cold days out in the mountains and staying in bothies. Matilda and her regular group of musicians performed the music in the Winter of 2010 at Mull Theatre on the Isle of Mull and in Cove Park.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Matilda approaches educational work with orchestras in a similar pupil centred way as her other education projects, however she works very closely with the orchestra’s musicians and finds way to collaborate successfully, planning each workshop carefully, drawing from the musicians’ strengths and experience as well as the repertoire that the orchestra are currently working with. Much of Matilda’s work with orchestras are multi media collaborations with their musicians, movement artists, videographers and photographers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Matilda's Map Method - Stage 3 of the process: Towards some Kind of Performance or Showing</image:title>
<image:caption>We began improvising some of our favourite ideas and “scenes” from these brainstorms, using percussion and technology and movement. We used the sketches as our guide and accompaniments for our ideas. Re-evaluating our ideas continuously rehearsing and moulding them was an experience and very challenging for us. We were continuously experiencing the sound of our music and feel of our movement as it developed. As our ‘story- line’ developed, we began to learn some musical skills. We learnt how to use Figure-notation (a way we structured and wrote down notes to our improvisations) which pupils created on chime bars and iPads (see links on my blog about how to compose with Figurenotes) We also created our own structured rhythms, conducting techniques and soundscapes. I call this process of development in my own practice ‘rehearsed improvisation’ – repeating what feels good and sounds right on our instrument and that is part of our piece as a whole, until we have something that we can play from memory or write down or conduct – also something (a melody, sound, rhythm, sequence etc) that can be developed and refined and shaped by the practitioner - to show pupils how to use percussion and various other instruments and technologies in a conventional way as well as keeping their way of playing it too if that is part of the ‘storyline’ - giving the pupils the skills and tools to begin to learn to play an instrument, but most importantly to keep true to their initial ideas and self expression. We developed the ability to make choices as a team. This helped to create other interesting musical ideas. For example -we wanted to depict the sunset through using subtle delicate metal sounds played in a sequence. We began to use the instruments we had as our painting palette or orchestral palette in which we could learn how to arrange timbre, numbers of instruments and soundscapes together. We also learnt how to conduct and lead musical ‘events’ as well as improvise, play and perform. Photography by: © Nick Photography</image:caption>

<image:title>Matilda's Map Method - Stage 1 of the Workshop Process</image:title>
<image:caption>Music warm-ups include: Various improvisation games using the voice - singing, rhyming words with rhythm and simple melodies, using our bodies to create rhythmic ‘windows’ accompanied by guitar and SCO musicians. Singing games with "windows" for the pupils to add in their own ideas Singing songs using our names, numbers, food, animals, colour as a way to connect together and discover some of our likes and dislikes with ease – useful for the following weeks of exploration. Exploring percussion and new technology, identifying how to achieve the creation of 'atmosphere' and other abstract concepts through soundscapes and sound effects (using Logic pro and Soundbeam, iPads and various percussion). (Ana’s movement warm-ups) these warm-ups are crucial in creating the right environment for pupils to work in – a safe place – It might be the first time a pupil has picked up an instrument or made up one word to a song - It is up to Ana and I to show the pupils this is a place for exploring, making mistakes and discovering our potential as well as having fun. This is also a place in which we give the pupils boundaries and guidelines in how to express themselves and work together with us as facilitators. This also helps teaching staff and others in the school to identify our styles and what we hope to achieve.</image:caption>

<image:title>Matilda's Map Method - Stage 2 of the Workshop Process</image:title>
<image:caption>Using a collaborative teaching and learning style: learning from the pupils as well as teaching them the tools and skills in which to make music and movement. I wrote contrasting sketches of music for SCO musicians to play to the pupils. This gave the pupils a palette in which to work from and some security to just sit and listen before having to act and give their ideas. Ana responded to these sketches through movement – giving examples – using play – asking what the pupils liked and if the movement ‘fitted’ to the music. These sketches helped myself and Ana to introduce ourselves more and give something of ourselves to the pupils - to put ourselves 'on the spot' and show pupils what we expect - making mistakes, re adjusting, discovering options, knowing there maybe many ways to achieve the same results. Listening to the music, talking and brainstorming ideas about how the music made us feel, move and think was very important to the pupils and allowed them to open up and give their ideas in their own words.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My Practice - The Map</image:title>
<image:caption>It is up to the facilitator or guide to give all the pupils the same map. The map has places, paths, markers and resting points on it. The map is our stimulus, direction, structure, inspiration, purpose, motivation and guide. For example, Places or objects on the map = Sketches of music or sounds are written/programmed (a tool box or palette) by the practitioner/guide and introduced to the explorers/pupils. This provides stimulus, a starting point, something for pupils to bounce off and respond to - finding inspiration from and perhaps are chosen as part of the final piece Paths and other places on the map that could hold atmosphere, memories and pictures in the mind or sensory experiences (i.e. Hampden school trip outside) = Practitioner uses these places with the pupils to give meaning, structure and form to the music. Reading the map, identifying landmarks, using the compass = Practitioner introduces the explorer to compositional techniques and concepts, such as cause and effect, call and response, sequences, repetition, harmony, ABA etc polyphony, arranging/orchestration. <image:title>My Practice - Create Musical Explorers for Adventurous Results: Rehearsed improvisation technique and collaborative teaching and learning styles</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the defining aspects of my work is to develop the practitioner's reflection. The practitioner needs time to reflect and re evaluate their methods. If we have too many barriers and ‘demons’ that we have not faced as a practitioner when we enter the room with those children, we will create limitations unknown to us, and to our pupils. We will never be perfect, so what we can do from time to time is share some of our vulnerabilities to the pupils appropriately, which is another way of allowing the pupils to make mistakes while exploring music and a chance to make it fun and add in humour.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My Practice - The Destination</image:title>
<image:caption>Once we understand the pupils’ musical ideas and what instruments they enjoy playing - their way of moving around the map, what areas and places they like best - we take a rest together. We stop walking and exploring and listen to each others’ adventures (mini performance). Having identified how we are all navigating on the map and what tools we like best, we can come together with more direction; our elements becoming one body moving on the same path, with more momentum until we reach our first destination. This is when we shape a piece together, which will become some kind of performance – selecting our favourite areas on the map we have been to, putting them together like a story or a new map that we all read from together. This is when the practitioner has to use their leadership skills and observations for successful music making. If we have time, we may move on, within a more concise area on the map, understanding how we all work together and moving quicker towards another destination. <image:title>My Practice - The Equipment</image:title>
<image:caption>Every expedition, whether it’s a long journey, or a short walk, needs clothing and equipment. Every piece of music needs instruments, voice or something to make sound with. I begin by giving the pupils the most basic equipment to start their journeys. I need to make sure the pupils are comfortable with this equipment. The facilitator or guide (me) makes them able to explore and rummage about with this basic equipment first. This equipment is in the form of warm-up exercises and learning about how to improvise. Improvisation by playing instruments, learning what the instruments are, how they sound and how to hold them, (learning different possibilities). Improvisation through singing simple songs and improvising songs using names, numbers, colours, animals and food. Improvisation with rhythm - rhythm games and exercises. Improvisation using music technology, which has instant impact to the ear, creates atmosphere and soundscapes effectively and gets the mind racing with ideas. Improvisation using Figurenotation, Improvisation with lyric writing. Improvised conducting techniques. The more we improvise together, the more we begin to work out which equipment will suit our needs best for our journey - More equipment to survive and getting to know each other, getting to know the team with ease.</image:caption>

<image:title>My Practice - Something for the Practitioner to think about</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes when you know the demons are in the woods, you can run or turn around and fight them because they are big and you can see and hear them. Sometimes you can ignore them and they don't appear, especially if you just keep on the move. Sometimes you just run and you don't even know they are behind you, even when you turn around, because they are hiding behind the trees and you can't see them or hear them. But when you stop and wait for a while, just listen and feel the wind on your face, you end up seeing a glimpse of them, but you can't fight them or run from them. They are just there. Just part of the scenery, your own scenery, where you have stopped and taken stock.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f44f01927563c27286de566/1608315637196-80Y7KYUV7A95VPGJNB7Y/Matilda+-+Music+and+Mountains.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>My Practice - The Explorers</image:title>
<image:caption>If the pupils don't keep moving around the map, exploring new paths and places, being courageous, even getting lost sometimes, they may get stuck on the map. The pupils are explorers foremost and have to discover how to use their equipment and follow the map by themselves before they get too much help. This is where the practitioner has to be sensitive. Pupils have to fall and get up and have a look about them at what happened, then they have to move on and if they see the same obstacle again, they may move through it with more ease. This means the practitioner has given the pupils a period of time to explore ideas, instruments, concepts, sounds and even sketches of music by themselves. They have also left the pupils to work out which places and markers, equipment and directions they like best. The practitioner is always there and will keep the pupils on the right track, usually asking them questions, getting the pupils to brainstorm, rather than telling them the answers straight away. Each pupil has the potential to go on their own exploration within or around this map, but they all stay inside the map, which is pretty large and daunting at the start (that is why we have the improvisation warm- ups and get to know each other before embarking on this journey). For each pupil this exploring time should be an adventure, with bits that are challenging, like learning a new skill on the instrument they have chosen or finding out which sound suits which place or ‘atmosphere’ etc. Pupils are forging their own practical ways of moving through the adventure (i.e. Their own ways of playing instruments and exploring music in general - pupil centred, in their own words). This is a musical collaborative teaching and learning style. The pupils hold the imagination through all of this exploration. The practitioner must capture this imagination. As practitioners we begin to involve ourselves by showing the pupils where the footholds are - how to hold and play an instrument, or how to finalise pupils’ ideas and make this imagination come to life through music.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Music and Mountains - The Project</image:title>
<image:caption>Matilda’s Music and Mountains education projects started in Braemar with Braemar school. Matilda and Mountain guide Mike Norbury led the children of Braemar school up to Glen Shiel bothy where they wrote their favourite song together. They also wrote a number of instrumentals and songs with Matilda back at the school and performed them at the Ski Cafe up at Glen Shiel ski Centre - where the audience went up on the chair lift! and in St Margaret’s church. An inspiring, wonderful project where the community and musicians from across Scotland came together to perform with children who had been inspired to write music and songs in response to their environment and their trip to the local bothy.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Yoga with Matilda Brown - About Matilda</image:title>
<image:caption>I begun teaching yoga in 2018 at Leadhills Village Hall until the lockdown of March 2020. Over that period I co-taught sessions with Pauline Slater, a practitioner of Pilates and Hatha yoga. In 2019, I took courses with my music company, Drake Music Scotland, on breathing techniques for musicians and teachers, which have since been woven into my yoga sessions. Many commented after my classes how the technique - different to what they’d experienced before - had helped them to “cope with stressful everyday tasks” (Liz Tulloch). Each week, my classes were set to carefully curated playlists of ambient recorded music, welcomed by participants as a part of their practice that helped them to relax, focus, and enjoy the class.</image:caption>
