The first Bothy Project was in collaboration with photographer Ben Winston. Matilda walked across Knoydart in the depths on winter 2009/2010. The Scottish Winter Tour was born out of this trip, where Matilda wrote music in response to her many arduous and cold days out in the mountains and staying in bothies.
The second trip was with photographer Nick Rawle, in Springtime. This trip has stood the test of time, and pieces of music based upon this are part of Matilda’s repertoire for many of her concerts and performances.
The Bothy Box Project
Matilda Brown, writer Martin Travers and filmmaker Martyn Robertson’s ‘Bothy Box Project’ consisted of composed music and film made with the contributions from users of Scottish bothies. Five boxes were placed in bothies across Scotland. Visitors encountered a box containing a notebook, pencils and a camera and were invited to share their experiences of bothying.
